Container Shipping Explained

Sole-use container shipping for vehicles — when it's worth the extra cost.

Container shipping puts your vehicle inside a sealed steel container, lashed, blocked and braced. Standard options are a 20ft container (one car) or 40ft container (one large vehicle or two cars).

Costs run roughly £2,200–£3,500 to most destinations for sole-use 20ft. It's roughly double RoRo — but for a high-value or classic vehicle, the protection is worth it. Containers also allow personal effects to be shipped legally inside the vehicle, with the right declaration.

Loading takes place at a UK port-side facility under supervision. The container is then sealed and tracked end-to-end. At destination, the vehicle is unloaded at a port facility and either collected or delivered onward.

Best for: classic cars, supercars, luxury vehicles, EVs requiring battery protection, non-runners and any vehicle you wouldn't want exposed to the elements for six weeks.
